 Aratika

An atoll absolutely extraordinary : the water is incredibly clear and its turquoise blue could make Van Gogh green with envy, the temperature is perfect, the corals and fishes are wonderful,...

A beautiful small island in the middle of the lagoon
Some pics of the inside of the lagoon taken from the outside border.

And vice versa, the outside border view from the inside. The black splash in the lagoon are coral spurs, someof which are near to the surface. So, if you're sailing inside the lagoon, be careful to them, because you can be in danger of breaking your boat.

The pearl farms

The farmers rarely live in the middle of the lagoon , but there're some who like it. These ones live in bungalows, which are houses on stilts, and their mean of tranaport is the boat, of course.

And here's what we can see inside the lagoon...from its surface.

Look these wonderful corals of thousands colours. The clearness of the water permits to take pics from 5 metres distance without using the flash.

And here're the coral spurs which stand outside the water. You have to pay attention no to touch them while you're sailing if you don't want to destriy your boat (or to transform a propeller into a daisy).

And here's a annexe of pearl farm. They use it for the maintenance of the farms. As you can notice also the birds get something out of it.

I spent a week on Aratika in 1975 when only 5 people & a dog lived there & pearl beds were first being developed. Best time of my life. Was a guest of the son of the man who developed the pearl beds. No paved runway, just a smoothed piece of beach, & a 6 pass. airplane. we ate what we caught, as did the dog who caught his own fish. Caught & ate cocont crab-still a delicacy, & snorkled with more sharks than you can imagine, even helped load copra on a copra boat. The most beautiful place this colorado mountain boy has ever been.
